Slate and chalk
A slate is a small black writing board in a wooden frame, used with chalk or a slate pencil, on which children learned to write their first letters.
Era: 90s
What it was like
Write, wipe with your hand, a cloth or a little water, and write again. No notebook or pen needed, so it cost very little.
A cracked slate and chalk-white hands were familiar pictures of the first school years.
