School-gate achar
School-gate achar was the sweet, sour and spicy pickle of plum, tamarind, olive or mango, plus amra with salt and chilli, bought from a cart or basket outside the gate after school.
Era: 90s & 2000s
What it was like
A taka or two got you a paper cone or a little plastic bag of it. Much of the tiffin money went here.
At home you were told not to eat 'outside food', which made it twice as good.
