New-book smell
The new-book smell is the scent of paper and ink from the fresh textbooks handed out at the start of the year, for many the best memory of starting a new class.

The moment you got them, you opened one and buried your nose in it, then looked at all the pictures first. The reading came later.
Since 2010 the government has handed out free textbooks at the start of the year, so 1 January is now a 'book festival'.
