Meena cartoon
Meena is a UNICEF cartoon series in which the stories of a girl called Meena carry messages about girls' schooling, health and equal rights.
Era: 90s & 2000s
What it was like
Made for several South Asian countries, it has been on Bangladeshi TV since the 1990s, with her brother Raju and Mithu the parrot alongside.
The stories are simple but each has a lesson: go to school, wash your hands, give girls and boys the same food. For many it was the first 'educational' cartoon they loved.
