Hurricane-lamp study
Studying by hurricane lamp meant doing homework beside a kerosene lantern during a power cut, a familiar scene in the 1990s and 2000s.
Era: 90s & 2000s
What it was like
A flame inside a glass chimney and a little knob to raise or lower the wick. Everyone sat round the one lamp with their books.
The chimney blackened and needed cleaning, and the smell of kerosene hung about all evening.
Questions
- What does a hurricane lamp burn?
