Hiding your Eid clothes meant keeping your new outfit out of sight until Eid day, so everyone saw it for the first time then.

What it was like

Tucked into a corner of the wardrobe or the bottom of a bag, and a firm 'no' to anyone who asked to see. Even the colour was a secret from friends.

A try-on on chand raat was allowed, but never outside. Putting on the new clothes before the morning prayer was how Eid began.
