Turning the antenna
Turning the antenna meant rotating the TV aerial tied to a bamboo pole on the roof until the picture cleared, which you had to do whenever the screen turned to snow.
Era: 90s & 2000s
What it was like
One person climbed up to turn it while another stood by the TV shouting, 'A bit more... stop!' A storm could knock it out of line again.
Once dish and cable connections arrived, rooftop aerials slowly disappeared.
Questions
- Why did the TV picture turn to snow?
- When the aerial pointed the wrong way or the signal was weak, the screen showed grainy static instead of a picture.
