Climbing for mangoes
Climbing for mangoes meant scrambling up a mango or guava tree in summer to pick the fruit yourself, sometimes from someone else's tree.
Era: 90s & 2000s
What it was like
Green mangoes with salt and chilli, ripe ones straight off the branch. After a storm, the race to gather fallen mangoes was a festival of its own.
Almost everyone has a story about picking from a tree and running before the owner saw.
